Work begins for the 2025 General Session

Work begins for the 2025 General Session

Utahns often ask for tips on engaging with the legislative process. One of the best pieces of advice I can give: engage with lawmakers early and often. While the Beehive State’s unique 45-day legislative session is the shortest in the country, we are back at work weeks after the legislative branch adjourns “Sine Die” from General Session. During the interim, committees vet issues and hear testimony from experts, stakeholders, and constituents. These meetings allow us to evaluate ideas, engage tough problems, and seek collaboration solutions ahead of session.

Lawmakers will convene for interim meetings on May 14-15. You can find the interim schedule and study items here.

This interim, I have the privilege of serving on the Judiciary and the Government Operations committees. As always, these meetings are open to the public and I would love to see you there. You can participate in person or online at le.utah.gov.

17 Consecutive Years with the Best Economic Outlook

Utah can’t stop winning. For the 17th consecutive year, the American Legislative Exchange Council ranked Utah No. 1 for best economic outlook, according to the ALEC-Laffer State Economic Competitiveness Index.

Utahns have created 324,821 small businesses that employ 45% of the state’s workforce. In fact, Wallethub recently found that 10 of the 30 best small cities to start a business are located right here in Utah.

The annual study found the Beehive State’s performance is directly impacted by its legislative policies. In general, the top-ranking states tend to tax less and spend less. Utah’s recipe for success is a combination of low taxes, fiscal prudence, a welcoming business environment, and – of course – you.

Hockey in the Beehive State

Utah is proud to have some of the most dedicated sports fans in the country, on every level and across multiple franchises. With the exciting announcement that the NHL is coming to Utah, Utah fans have raised their voices in support. This is an exciting opportunity for our state, bringing with it not only a new team to support, but a chance to clean up our Capital city. The downtown revitalization project will strengthen existing infrastructure and improve community safety within Salt Lake, ensuring that Utah fans can continue to show their support for their teams for generations to come.
